Ionic Formulas From Names
<---Previous Assignment - Next Assignment--->

Time Length
  • 2 Days
Instructions
  • On your own paper, complete the worksheet below (you do not need to write down the question unless you want to)
    • In your head, Identify what group of ion the cation (first name) and anion (last name) are in so you can find the charge..
      • (Either Representative, Transition, or Polyatomic ions.)
    • Write down their symbols and charges (write this down to show your work)
    • Use the bonding rules from the notes on 11-1 to write the formula.
  • Hint: for Identifying anions(last name): if the anion(last name) ends in "ide" it probably has been changed
    • Oxide means Oxygen, Hydride means Hydrogen, etc.
    • However, there are a few polyatomic ions whose name ends in "ide"
      • Peroxide and Hydroxide are examples.
